Boosting your Immune System

Boosting your Immune System

Your immune system is your bodyguard. It works both pro-actively and protectively to shield you from anything in your world that threatens your life and limb. Is your immune system low? Probably, if you get chronic, continuing infections, colds, and respiratory allergies. In today’s world, a low immune response can be directly related to poor diet and nutrition. Other big factors: prolonged use of antibiotics, steroid drugs or heavy metal pollutants.

Keeping the immune system healthy means keeping the whole body (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual) healthy. For many people this includes unlearning the quick fix, popping-pill mentality that Western medicine sometimes teaches us. There are no short cuts to acquiring health and happiness and no pills to miraculously “cure” a weakened immune system.

The question to ask yourself when contemplating the health of your immune system is “How do I nourish myself?” Each person’s body and life experiences are unique and what feeds and nourishes one person will vary for another. The ongoing process of relearning how to love oneself and to value being alive is an important part of restoring strength to our immune system. Simple daily practices such as breathing deeply, speaking kindly, treating ourselves and others compassionately, and making lifestyle changes that support a sustainable and nonviolent world, strengthen our spirits, our bodies, and our communities.

What depresses immune response?

  • Long term courses of drugs: antacids reduce nutrient assimilation, antibiotics destroy friendly bacteria to GI immunity, anti-inflammatory drugs (like aspirin and ibuprofen) inhibit white cells that fight infection.

  • Long term exposure to smoke, chemicals and pollutants put a strain on the body’s natural detoxification system.

  • A diet high in fat, chemicalized “non-food” foods, a.k.a “foods in a box”.

  • Repeated exposure to allergens (from foods, chemicals or environmental allergens) causes the immune system to take a dive because immune defenses are all channeled to deal with the allergen rather than to fight infection.

  • A diet high in saturated fats, refined sugars or trans fats: they’re in deep fried foods, fast foods and almost all snack foods. Eating these foods regularly may mean your immune system is taking a nose dive all day long.

  • Low intake of protective, antioxidant and enzyme-rich fruits and vegetables.

  • Excessive dieting or low nutrient intake.

  • A lifestyle low in rest. Natural killer cell activity is reduced by as much as 28% when sleep is cut by 4 hours.

  • A poor outlook on life or severe, long lasting depressions.

The very nature of immune strength means that it must be built from the inside out. Giving your body generous, high quality, natural remedies at the first sign of infections improves your chances of overcoming disease before it takes serious hold. Building good immune defenses takes time and commitment, but it is worth it.
